Research On The Exegesis Of The Five Ancient Annotations Of The Sermon On The Zen Forest

Since the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest was published in the Song Dynasty,it has been valued by Yuan,Ming,Qing Dynasty and even contemporary Zen Buddhism,and has a high religious value and academic status.In the Ming and Qing dynasties,five annotations appeared one after another: Sound and Meaning for the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest,Combined Annotations for the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest,Comment and Eulogy for the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest,Compliant Explanation for the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest,and the Notes on the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest.Contemporary Zen masters and scholars are also studying and interpreting this precious book of Zen Forest.However,the academic circle's eyes are mainly on the religious significance and ideological value of the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest.There is also very little research on the five types of annotations,and they have not noticed the value of the five types of annotations in terms of exegesis.Although the five ancient annotations of the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest are of different types,they are all made for the interpretation of the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest.It is possible to conduct a synchronic and diachronic comparative study of its exegetical style,content,methods and characteristics of the exegesis.In terms of exegetical style,the five ancient annotations are different.The styles of the Sound and Meaning and Combined Annotations are the most similar,and the style of the Comment and Eulogy is the most special.In terms of exegetical content,the five ancient annotations contain different specific content,which can be summarized into seven parts: word interpretation,phonetic notation,sentence meaning stringing,specifying chapters,interpreting famous things and supplementing historical facts,author's comments,and comment and eulogy.Comparing the exegetical styles and contents of the five ancient annotated texts with traditional exegetics,it is found that the exegetical styles of the Sound and Meaning and the Combined Annotations are inherited from the sound and meaning of Buddhist scriptures,while the exegetical styles of the Compliant Explanation and the Notes are inherited from chapter sentences,and are innovative on this basis.The Comment and Eulogy is a unique exegetical style of Zen Buddhism.In terms of exegetical methods,the four ancient annotated texts other than the Comment and Eulogy are not much different from traditional exegetical methods.The main methods of interpreting content words include six methods: synonymous training,describing interpretation,setting up meaning boundaries,morpheme analysis,pronunciation training,and quoting documents,etc;the main methods of explaining function words include four methods: describing the grammatical meaning and specifying the part of speech of the function words,description Grammatical meaning,synonym training and sound training;there are six main methods for interpreting sentences: translation,illocutionary meaning,interpreting rhetoric,changing sentence patterns,interpreting common language with colloquialism,supplementing explanation with Zen stories,etc.In terms of exegetical characteristics,the Sound and Meaning has only the name of sound and meaning but no actual sound and meaning;the Comment and Eulogy detours to talk about Zen,which is mysterious and mysterious;the Compliant Explanation is easy to understand and very innovative;the Notes is inherited from the Sound and Meaning,and is also the more advanced one among the five ancient annotations.The research on the exegetical aspects of the five ancient annotated editions of the Precious Admonitions of the Zen Forest can expand the field of exegetics,add new exegetical styles,and supplement the exegetical history of Zen books,which has important exegetical value.In addition,it has important value in Zen,philology,lexicology,and dictionary compilation.
