Futon is the masterpiece of Japanese Naturalist representative writer Katai Tayama(1872-1930),and it is also a work that establishes his position in the literary world.Based on the true story between the writer and Michiyo Okada,it highlights the various difficulties faced by intellectual women in pursuit of freedom and independence after the Meiji Restoration.Through the heroine Yoshiko's experience of pursuing ideal and love,it shows the difficulty of women's growth and progress in a patriarchal society. In this process, the female images displayed by Yoshiko not only have distinctive characteristics of the times, intertwined with the contradictions and conflicts between "new" and "old",but also reflect the author's contradictory attitude towards Meiji intellectual women.Futon is known as the "true" advertisement of Katai. All the characters and plots can be followed in the actual life.By comparing the differences between Yoshiko and her prototype character Michiyo Okada,we can clarify the creative intention of the author hidden the character image of Yoshiko, then discuss the efforts and attempts made by Meiji male intellectuals represented by Katai to maintain their own discourse power. The first chapter discusses the creative background of the quilt from two aspects:social background, literary background and the writer's creative motivation,so as to clarify the external information of the text.On the basis of the first chapter, the second chapter focuses on the text, expounds the character image of Yoshiko in the quilt and the contradiction of her image from the male perspective. The first section focuses on the "new" of Yoshiko's character image.Yoshiko, who is well-off,has outstanding knowledge and lofty ideals and pursues love freely.Yoshiko has the typical characteristics of "new women" in the Meiji period. The second section discusses the "old" of Yoshiko's character image.Yoshiko makes concessions for men on the grounds of "I am a woman" and begs men's understanding with "degeneration",which vividly shows the weakness of old-fashioned women. The third section discusses the change of male intellectuals' attitude towards Yoshiko which stems from the contradictory psychology of men.The third chapter combines the contents of the first two chapters to further explore the contradiction between the author's creative techniques and creative ideas when setting the character image. The first section analyzes the creative techniques using by Katai in quilt.Firstly,Katai uses the third person narration with the effect of the first person narration and internal focus narration, which makes the character modeling more objective and the psychological description more natural.Secondly, the writing skills of explicit description. In the quilt,Katai boldly exposed the repressed sexual desire, ruthlessly stripped off his dignity as a teacher and exposed his true self to the readers, which is the progressive side of him.The second section analyzes the "old" of the creative concept of Katai in combination with the creative background of the works. In order to expose his dark side and monopolize the right to speak,Katai deliberately omitted the communication content between himself and Michiyo in the quilt, and set Yoshiko's fate according to his own intention rather than the facts, which is the backward side of Katai. The contradiction between "the old" and "the new" reflected in the quilt is not only the contradictory image of Meiji intellectual women, the contradictory psychology of Meiji male intellectuals, but also the epitome of the contradiction in the Meiji era.
