Learning motivation is one of the important emotional factors affecting second language learning.It is the key to the success of learning,and an important topic in the research of second language teaching.As the global "Chinese fever" continues to heat up,more and more Lao students choose to study in China,but there are fewer studies on the motivation of Lao students to learn Chinese.Therefore,it is necessary to study the Chinese learning motivation of these students to provide an empirical reference for the Chinese teaching of Lao students.Based on the motivational theories of Gardner,Lamber,D(?)rynei and previous Chinese Learning Motivation Scale,this thesis takes the Lao students with an intermediate level of Chinese proficiency in a university in Guizhou as the research object,employing questionnaire surveys and interviews to explore the learning motivation of these students and the influence of the four factors including age,gender,tuition type and major on students’ motivation to learn Chinese.It is found that the overall motivation of these students is good and their main learning motivation is instrumental motivation.According to the level of the influence,the various motivation types are ranked as: instrumental motivation > achievement motivation > communication and integration motivation > intrinsic interest motivation > learning situation motivation > external pressure motivation.Among the four factors of gender,major,tuition type,and major that affect students’ motivation to learn Chinese,age has significant differences in motivation for learning situations,while gender,major,and tuition type have no significant influence in each motivation type.Finally combined with the results from data analysis and interviews,some suggestions are made for students,teachers and schools respectively to motivate students to learn Chinese.This thesis aims to be beneficial for teaching Chinese as a foreign language,promoting further development and providing certain reference for the future study of Chinese learning motivation.
