The development of British painting is different from other European countries. The humanism thought of the Renaissance in the 15 th century did not bring innovation to British painting. The British painting style and technique before the 18 th century were mainly influenced by foreign culture and foreign artists, such as Holbyin in Germany and Van Dyke of Flanders, which directly affected the development of British portrait painting. It was not until the 18 th century that British art really began to flourish under the influence of enlightenment thought, economy, politics and social form, and showed a unique, diverse and irreplaceable artistic appearance with its own national character, and became the European Art Center after France. In this period, the British engraving artists promoted the development of British Art and occupied a very important position in the innovation of engraving and printing technology, originality, reality, drama and intertextuality of the engraving content, and the unique dissemination of engraving.Engraving broadens the way of art communication and thus prospers.Painting begins to combine with publishing media, and has entered into the life of the middle class more widely.Communication science began to be established in the United States in the 1930 s and 1940 s,and was first applied to the analysis of literature, art, music, stage art, television film, news and newspapers and other media. In China, communication studies began only in the 1970 s.In the early 1990 s Shao Peiren published the first art communication monograph,"Art Communication",which established the foundation of domestic art communication research. With the update of the modern and contemporary media, art communication is constantly updating and developing, and applied in art research. The use of art communication to analyze the 18 th century British engraving can be separated from the single perspective of painting ontology language and artist itself. From the perspective of art disseminator, receiver, art information, media and other communication elements,we can take them as a whole and not be separated analysis,so as to explore the development and evolution of British engravings in the18 th century and enter into a single perspective.Step by step, the content, form transformation and its influence on the masses of engraving in this period and the important position in the history of art are analyzed. In contemporary times, with the increasingly rich art media and the diversification of art forms, the application of art communication has also played an important role in exploring the direction of art development.
