A Universal Study Of The "Five Pairs Of Categories" In Art Stylistics

The problem of style has always been the concern of western art theorists since ancient times.For them,however,it is difficult to form a system.Wolflin established his important position in the history of art with the "five pairs of categories" proposed in Art Stylology.However,in the research field of western art history,art theorists and critics who hold various methodologies have different opinions on Wolflin's methodology,but they can't get around the latter,which makes it necessary to analyze Wolflin's methodology.In Wolflin's view,the form of "vision" has its own discipline,and as a general concept,he aims to establish a new framework for the history of art in general.In fact,since the publication of the book Art Stylology,many western scholars have criticized it one after another,and scholars from various fields have questioned Wolflin's formal analysis method,which makes us doubt the universality of its methodology.Who is right or wrong with these criticisms?However,no matter how persuasive their criticisms are,they all attack Wolflin's theory from different positions,and they do not enter the field that can most reverse Wolflin's theory--the formal analysis of art noumenon.The debate between Fong Wen and Cahill is not only a heated discussion on the specific problems in Stream Bank,but also a profound reflection on the national nature of methodology.The debate between them has become an opportunity for the author to consider whether Wolflin's formal analysis law is universal.From the standpoint of formal analysis,does Wolflin's theory really apply to the study of images of Western culture?In fact,it is difficult to give a correct answer when the method of formal analysis is applied to emotion painting and modern painting dominated by subjective consciousness.In other words,in non-classical or non-naturalistic art,Wolflin's theory is missing a basic foundation.Wolflin's "five pairs of categories" is not universal in defining artistic styles,and it is not fully explicable in some western artistic styles.However,in Oriental painting,or specifically in the early Chinese painting,this exotic product will produce all kinds of errors.Of course,the "five pairs category" of wolflin can not be completely denied,the key problem is how we understand and use this method.
