In the process of globalization, sports has gradually become a metaphor and symbol of comprehensive national strength between nations, and is regarded as an important national soft power.Since the reform and opening up,China's economic strength has been continuously increasing. With the continuous expansion of sports undertakings in China, amateur sports, competitive sports, sports industry, and sports culture have been developed in an all-round way;international sports exchanges spurred by large-scale sports events have become increasingly frequent. The success of cross-cultural communication in sports cannot be separated from the successful translation of sports texts.Research on the translation of sports texts will help to summarize the past experience and better serve international sports events in the future.Schema theory falls under the psychology domain. In a broad sense, schema is a kind of cognitive structure or knowledge structure which can be long stored in people's minds.Schema theory maintains that to understand information, people must match the existing schema in their mind when they receive new information.Translation is essentially to present the content carried by one language in another language. To achieve bilingualism,it is necessary for translators to search and activate the schema of target language, transferring and reconstructing.Schema theory plays a big role in the translation process, providing theoretical and practical guidance for the understanding of the source text and the expression of the target language. The author has collected the publicity texts of Xiamen Marathon from 2003 to 2021 to study the C-E translation under the guidance of schema theory. The paper discusses the role of schema in decoding and encoding, and aims to provide feasible translation strategies for the future C-E translation of sports texts, which is of valuable practical significance.Since it was founded in 2003,Xiamen Marathon has become one of the world-famous marathon events with its increasing scale and growing professionalization. The success of Xiamen Marathon cannot be separated from the efforts of the staff and the translators' accurate translation.Successful translation is the process of translating and constructing meaning accurately by using schema stored in the mind. For translators who work on the publicity texts of Xiamen Marathon, schema helps the translator to get ready before translating,to adjust when translating and to proofread after translating, and finally to form accurate translation. There is no standard for the classification of schema theory.Based on empirical analysis on typical examples of the publicity texts of Xiamen Marathon, the author tries to analyze how schema theory affects the translation of sports texts, and how to get better translation of sports texts, especially from the perspective of lingual schema, contextual schema, stylistic schema and cultural schema. It is found that firstly, the more abundant schemata stored in the translator's mind, the easier it is to understand the source text, and consequently the more successful the schema decoding is.Secondly,in the process of translation, reasonably activating and adjusting the related schema helps to convey more accurate information to target language readers and consequently the more successful the schema encoding is.Finally,in order to improve the quality of translation, the translator, for one thing, needs to intensify lingual schema, innovate contextual schema, build stylistic schema and enrich cultural schema, and for another,he should solve the three problems — the correspondence, difference and default of schema between the source and target text,so that he can properly encode according to source text.
