Hannah Arendt,by tracing ancient Greek philosophy,proposed the theory of the public realm and further deepens her interpretation of the importance of it grounded its background.In order to explain the authentic concept of politics,she strictly distinguished between the public and private realm.Action,indicating the human plurality and natality,was thought to the best human activity and a channel to achieve political freedom.This paper is an exploration of the significance of Arendt's theory of the public realm,grounded in her reversion to classical philosophy and critique of modernity.She appreciated the brilliant political practice in the classical period,and integrated it into the exploration of human beings.On this very note,she took the essence of ancient Greek philosophy for redefining the ethics of modern society and concept of the public realm for human activities with the method of phenomenology.The first part is the classical background of public realm theory.Based on the criticism and reflection of Plato and Aristotle's philosophy,Arendt took the essence of ancient Greek philosophy as it seeks to clarify that human beings validate their existence through action in the public realm and self-management.She reaffirmed that the accurate description of politics was the commitment to the realization of human freedom.The second part is the main chapter,focusing on the specific content of the public realm.The public realm was rich in contents with the greatest publicity,a real space for policy and a common world.The greatest crisis that modernity brought to human was emptiness.In this connection,people could garner approval and showed their uniqueness by interacting with each other in the public realm which presented human plurality.The development of totalitarianism had erased human individuality,thinking about existence and enthusiasm for politicy.The third part of the paper is an evaluation of public realm theory.The existence of the public realm illuminated the dark age,but it tended to be closed which was a real abandonment of human beings.As a result,we are committed to recalling for the resurrection of human activities and overcoming the cultural crisis and hypocritical politics brought about by modernity and still longing for political community and prosperous life.
