The Modern Transformation Of Chinese Fables In The Early Twentieth Century (1903-1930)

This thesis intends to select newspapers,periodicals,collections of fables and textbooks of primary school in the early 20 th century(1903-1930)as the first-hand historical materials to discuss the modern transformation process of Chinese fables,and tries to draw a lesson from it.The article is composed of four parts.Section One explores the factors that lead to the modern transformation of Chinese fables.Since the end of the Qing dynasty,the translation of foreign fables and the trend of running social newspaper had provided the basis for the modern transformation of Chinese fables,which is embodied in that they created a new modern concept of Chinese fable,and introduced modern content,expressions,artistic techniques,etc.Section Two expounds the modern transformation of Chinese fables' themes.The theme of fables in the early 20 th century indicates strong enlightenment spirit,which is embodied in the nationality sense of hardship,the self-criticism consciousness and the individual consciousness.Section Three expounds the modern transformation of Chinese fables' forms.The form of fables in the early 20 th century is diverse and close to the life of modern people,which is embodied in the vernacular and popularization of language,the mutual penetration between fables and other literary genre,and the transformation of the relationship between fables and illustrations.Section Four discusses the achievements and dilemmas of the modern transformation of Chinese fables.The achievement of fables in the early 20 th century is manifested by the mutual influence of fable creation and fable theory,and the birth of children's fables;The dilemma is manifested by the lack of professional fable newspapers and periodicals,the scarcity of professional fable writers,and the short of fable theory.
