This thesis has adopted the Polysystem Theory with the purpose ofconducting a study on translation of foreign children's literature in the early 20th century and the role that translated literature played in building up modern Chinese children's literature.This thesis consists of six parts. The first part is a brief introduction to literature review, assumptions and structure design involved in this thesis. The second part briefs children's literature from the definition of Children's literature, the developing clue of Western children's literature prior to the 20th century and conditions of the traditional Chinese children's literature. The third part carries a macro study on the reception of foreign children's literature in the early 20th century from aspects of translation background, translated works, translation scale and significance. The fourth part is a study on the interrelation between translated foreign children's literature and modern Chinese children's literature. It explores the controlling power of the horizon of expectation and the mission of modern Chinese children's literature over translation and the role that translated foreign children's literature in the literary system of Chinese children's literature. The fifth part is the case study, in which translated versions of Aesop's Fables and Anderson's Fairy Tales have been taken into analysis from the perspective of the receiving culture and ideology.In conclusion, translation of foreign children's literature in the early 20th century is an outcome of the time and a requirement of the self-development of Chinese children's literature. Translated foreign children's literature as a shaping force helped the construction of modern Chinese children's' literature under the control of the politics, ideology and poetics of the target culture.
