The publishing industry in Suzhou in the Ming Dynasty entered a period of sustained and rapid development,on the basis of engraving in the Song and Yuan Dynasties.Especially from the middle to late Ming Wanli to the end of Ming Chongzhen,Suzhou has various engraving activities and many famous works.The illustration and drawing styles of novels in this period are also more elegant than other regions.During the period of the late Ming Dynasty,the continuous innovation of woodcut novel illustrations in Suzhou not only reflected the close cooperation of illustration creators such as painters,carvers and book dealers,but also reflected the ancient Suzhou contains the sense of integration and innovation.The late Ming Dynasty Suzhou folk woodcut novel illustrations,which rely on book carriers and novel texts but show the subjective thinking of illustration designers,are in the cross field of art,design and literature.In order to analyze Suzhou novel illustrations more comprehensively,this paper studies the development background,image characteristics,text proliferation and artistic influence of Suzhou novel illustrations from the perspective of design,art and literature.First of all,through the analysis of the reasons about the rise of woodcut novel illustration books in Suzhou,this article points out the general situation of the scale distribution,advertising,and techniques of folk bookstores in Suzhou in the late Ming Dynasty.Secondly,this article analyzes and summarizes the image characteristics of Suzhou Fangshu's engraved novel illustrations in the style evolution,layout layout,situation construction,etc.through the horizontal combing and vertical comparison of the woodcut novels' illustrations in Suzhou in the Ming Dynasty.In addition,through the analysis of the novel illustration books such as the "different picture expression of the same visual elements" and "the same text illustration with multiple versions of the novel illustration books " in the late Ming Dynasty Suzhou folk bookstores.the article deeply analyzes analyzes the influence of the illustrated visual image on the novel text.At the same time,it also explores the influence of illustrations of Suzhou novels in the late MingDynasty on Suzhou prints and lithographic illustrations in the late Qing Dynasty,and provides creative ideas for modern text illustration design.The final part of the research is the illustration creation practice based on the "Bai Niangzi Yongzhen Leifeng Tower" created by the Ming Dynasty novel writer Feng Menglon,,the article carried out the image features,drawing concepts and modern popular elements and image drawing techniques of the Suzhou woodcut novel illustrations in the late Ming period.This illustration design and derivative product design not only completes the new connection between traditional cultural resources and contemporary art,but also injects the vitality of the times into the modern transformation of the Suzhou novel illustrations in the late Ming Dynasty and the inheritance of the White Snake story.
