From "Shanghai Experience" To "Hong Kong Influence"

Due to the shared colonial and semi-colonial background and cultural sensibility in urban,Hong Kong and Shanghai have maintained close ties with each other and show obvious affinity and relevance.Especially at the turn of the 40’s and the 50’s,the drastic changes of the political structure in China’s mainland made a large number of fund and resources move into Hong Kong,which had a important impact on its economic development,social and cultural patterns and so on.As for literature,since Xu Xu,Liu Yichang,Jin Yong,Ma Lang,Zhang Ailing,Nangong Bo,Huang Sicheng,Song Qi and other writers,who are well-experienced,moved to Hong Kong from Shanghai,the literature world in Hong Kong had fallen into “Shanghai Style” because of their writings,comments,editorial activities,cultural activities and educating.And it was not until the mid-to-late 1960 s that the new generation of post-war youth in Hong Kong universally participated in literary activities that the “Shanghai Style” had gradually faded.However,since Hong Kong and Shanghai,after all are different cultural fields,this group of cross-regional writers must change themselves in the new area and show the changes in their writings.The paper is aimed to the cultural context of Shanghai in the 1930 s to 1940 s and Hong Kong in the 1950 s to 1960 s,and the analysis of the literary creation of Xu Xu,Liu Yichang and Jin Yong,to find the change from “Shanghai Style” to “Hong Kong Style”.Chapter One: The flow of the Chinese writers during the cultural transformation period around 1949.Based on Shanghai and Hong Kong,the paper aims to discover the spatial migration and the identity reconstruction of them.The first is spatial immigration.When lots of leftist writers came back to Shanghai from Hong Kong,meanwhile,many other writers in Shanghai came to Hong Kong because of ideological conflicts or other else.And they quickly became important in Hong Kong due to their efforts.The second is the reconstruction of identity.Writers in Shanghai had become “point” and “cadre”,and the writers who came to Hong Kong become marginalized.Chapter Two: Three-dimensional urban legend.The developed urban civilization of Shanghai and the heterogeneity under the concession cultural form,gave birth to modern urban legend writing,which is similarity in Hong Kong.In addition,the obvious “Shanghaization” of Hong Kong’s urban space in the 1950 s made this group of “Shanghai legendary literati” still create a lot of works in Hong Kong.However,the concept of “city and city”in the cross-regional perspective,the fission of the emotion and the spirit of the original homeland,the the “marginal vitality” inspired by the geographical location and cultural status of Hong Kong border,which changed their writing paradigm greatly.Take Xu Xu as an example,his Hong Kong-period works broke through the romantic and exotic model in 1940 s,but tried to find the mining secular legend in the trivial.And also through the deep contrast between the city to go to the deep and the three-dimensional urban legend.Chapter Three: The inheritance and the innovation of modernist literature.In the 1950 s,Hong Kong,whether political,cultural,or daily consumption environment,was the most suitable cultural field for the growth pf modernist literature in China a that time.Because of this,Chinese modernist literature,which started from Shanghai in the 1930 s,continued,inherited,and acquired a more mature form in Hong Kong in the 1950 s.Liu Yichang,a master of modern literature in Hong Kong in 1950 s and 1960 s,began his experimental explorations with modernist in Shanghai.Since coming to Hong Kong,he has created complicated,alternative but mature modernist literature.Chapter Four: Combination of refined and popular literature.With the development of urban civilization,the prosperity of publishing organization and the huge community of citizens,the popular literature of Shanghai and Hong Kong has blossomed everywhere.However,compared with Shanghai,Hong Kong has a dominant economic and cultural position,lacking other powerful forces to compete with the commercialization of literature.Therefore,when writers in Shanghai came to Hong Kong due to a turning,on the one hand,because of the highly commercialized literature,they had to give in;on the other hand,they tried to take up the challenge and respond positively,which is fully displayed in new martial arts novels of Jin Yong.Chapter Five: Towards Hong Kong.Through the comparison in city-to-city,city-to-rural,Xu Xu and other writers get three-dimensional urban imagination;through the fusion of lots of modernist skills,Liu Yichang and other writers get mature modernist literature;through the combination of the refined and popular literature,Jin Yong and other writers get more used to Hong Kong,but all the changes are based on the social and cultural environment in Hong Kong in 1950 s and 1960 s.This group of Shanghai literati also realized the change from the experience of Shanghai to the influence of Hong Kong.
