Abstract/Summary:
In the historical development of the modern society," hair "became the focus of all kinds of power competition, which showed a microcosm of the social development and changes. For male plait, the struggle for political power was the main cause. And for the female hair style, the reason included traditional ethics, modern civilization, state power and individual subjectivity. In different periods, women’s haircut had different emphasis on power regulation.at the same time.they also had their own choice. This paper analyzes the problem of women’s hair cutting from 1911 to 1937.Based on philosophy, literature and sociology.this paper wants to explore the change of social power and the individual’s choice by extracting the comments and demands of people in different periods, and hopes to find the change and development of society. There are three parts in the context. The first part discusses the reasons for the emergence of women’s hair-cutting behavior in modern times and the contradiction with traditional culture.Since the end of the Qing Dynasty, men had advocated the emancipation of women,on this basis, women’s self-consciousness becomes stronger, the haircut of female was proposed. In fact, short hair has great advantages in health, time, money and personal safety,so it had been advocated by many persons. In the meanwhile, haircut had also caused a lot of debate. The second chapter mainly discusses the traditional ethics and the discourse competition of female consciousness.Modern female liberation was first advocated by male elite,so it was a relatively aphasia for women. There were different reactions and opinions about haircuts due to the difference between traditional etiquette and female consciousness training. As a whole, from the beginning of the Republic of China to the 1920s,women’s haircut behavior showed an increasing trend, this behavior became a proof of opposition to traditional family ethics, and also became one of the criteria to measure the degree of civilization in a region. The third chapter discusses the contradiction of regime compulsion and individual choice in women’s hair. After the beginning of the National Revolution, the focus of women’s haircut began to shift from the conflict of values between individuals to the struggle for power with the state. The haircut became a symbol of revolution, the active haircut became the object of recognition, and the body’s "individuality" gave way to"nationalization",However, after the beginning of the new life movement,on the one hand, the state’s compulsory regulation had created the ideal national image in the eyes of some governments,on the other hand,it had been resisted by both female consciousness and consumer culture,in which the female body carried out its own choice.
