As a new bud of breaking the earth in Chinese literature and art after the end of the Cultural Revolution,"Light and Shadow" has experienced 20 years of scorching development,and finally the process of indifferent decline,showing not only the rise and fall of the photography magazine "Light and Shadow".What is more is the epitome of the development of Chinese photography in the past 20 years,as well as the attempts and breakthroughs made by photography journals for image dissemination."Light and Shadow" was founded in December 1981.It is not only the first photographic publication in Jiangsu Province after China's reform and opening up,but also the first provincial-level professional photographic publication in China.At that time,the catastrophe of the Cultural Revolution had just ended,and the ideological liberation and literary trend of thought in the land of China quietly began."Light and Shadow" was a public platform for exchanging and discussing professional photography knowledge in this period.it plays a positive role in promoting the development of Chinese photography art and the construction of photography theory research system and has important historical value.This paper takes the photography series "Light and Shadow" as the research object,by combing the contents of 93 issues of “Light and Shadow” from 1981 to 2000,starting with the background,development,editorial concept and content composition of "Light and Shadow",this paper analyzes and summarizes the historical value of "Light and Shadow" as a professional photography publication for the public,which promotes the development of photography art in China in the 1980 s and 1990 s.As well as the exploration value of image communication after the transformation and revision of the journal.Secondly,the author also analyzes the reasons for the suspension of "Light and Shadow",in order to provide some valuable summary and enlightenment for the operation of magazines and newspapers.
