As one of the representatives of Henry James 's novels in late period,The wings of the Dove has a lot of modern characteristics in its narration.The third-person limited viewpoints for characters make the narration of all the novel filled with mental features of characters.The analysis of Mental space usually shows the mechanism of the construction and understanding of the discourse,and it means an inner representation of the relationships of the external objects,namely,a man's cognition or reconstruction of the external relationships.Mental space is an ongoing process including constant process of construction and deconstruction,during which the meanings can be constructed and conveyed.In Wings,the construction of mental space has a close connection with the skills of its narrative form.On the one hand,James highlights the characters' mental space through juxtaposition of plots,narrative progression and narrative time;On the other,the construction of mental space has produced influences the forms of manifestations of the narrative plots,narrative process and narrative time.Based on Gilles Fauconnier's Mental Space Theory,This paper is trying to study the narrative form skills from narrative plots,narrative progress and narrative time,exploring the construction of characters' mental space and the expression of characters'inner world.Besides,metal space can be regarded as a concern for the narrative content as well as for the narrative form.
