Shuowen Jiezi and Yupian are two very important dictionaries in ancient China. They have been revised and printed many times in the past thousand years. Therefore, most of the editions we see today are the revision editions in Song Dynasty, but it is hard to see their original appearance. However, the discovery of Shuowen Mubu and The Remainder of the Original Yupian, written in Tang Dynasty, made it possible for academics to see earlier versions of Shuowen and Yupian, whose value is self-evident.By comparing Shuowen and Yupian in Tang and Song Dynasties,we can find that there are many differences between the handwritten editions of Tang Dynasty and the revised editions of Song Dynasty, and the changes of these two dictionaries in Tang and Song Dynasties have some common characteristics and rules. This paper compares the corresponding parts of Shuowen Mubu written in Tang Dynasty and Xu Xuan’s revised version of Shuowen in Song Dynasty,as well as the corresponding parts of Daguangyihui Yupian, which was repaired by Chen Pengnian and others in Song Dynasty. It also analyses the differences between the two versions of the same dictionary and the common changes experienced by the two dictionaries during the Tang and Song Dynasties, and summarizes the reasons for the changes in the form and meaning of the characters, and sums up the rules of the changes. The main contents of this paper can be divided into the following five parts:The first part is the introduction, which introduces the research background of this paper, summarizes the related research of Shuowen and Yupian, and briefly introduces the two dictionaries and the relationship between Shuowen and Yupian. The second part compares the corresponding parts of Shuowen Mubu and Xu Xuan’s revised version of Shuowen Mubu, classifies and summarizes their differences in the form, meaning and other aspects, and gives examples to analyze them. The third part compares the corresponding parts of The Remainder of the Original Yupian and the Daguangyihui Yupian, and also classifies and summarizes the differences between the two in the form, meaning and other aspects, and gives examples for analysis. The second and third parts are the key parts and the core of this paper. The fourth part summarizes the similarities of the changes of the two dictionaries in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and summarizes the rules of the changes according to the contents of the second and third parts. The fifth part is the conclusion, which summarizes the research contents and conclusions of the article, and points out the innovation and shortcomings of this paper.
