In order to study the failure characteristics of Yttrium Aluminum Garnet(YAG)under shock loading and the ballistic performance of transparent ceramic composite armor,the quasistatic and dynamic compression experiments of YAG transparent ceramic and the theoretical and numerical simulation study of projectiles penetrating into YAG transparent ceramics and its composite armor are carried out.The analytical model of penetration depth of transparent materials is established to analyze the influencing factors of the ballistic performance of YAG transparent ceramic.Numerical simulation method has been adopted to study the ballistic performance of transparent ceramic composite armor.The main contents are as follows:(1)Experimental study of mechanical characteristics under quasi-static/dynamic compression and analyses of micro-scale failure mechanism of YAG transparent ceramicThe quasi-static and dynamic compression tests of YAG transparent ceramic were carried out,from which the mechanical response characteristics under different strain rate loads were obtained.The SEM was used to characterize the YAG transparent ceramic fragments after the tests,followed by the failure mechanism of YAG based on the observation results.(2)DOP test of YAG transparent ceramic/glass and ballistic performance of YAG/glass transparent ceramic composite armor under the impact of typical armor-piercing projectileBallistic tests of 12.7mm armor-piercing projectile impacting on YAG transparent ceramics/glass were carried out.The ballistic performance of these two materials were compared.Based on the experiment results,the ballistic resistance mechanisms of YAG transparent ceramics and glasses were analyzed.Subsequently,ballistic tests of YAG transparent ceramic composite armor with different areal densities impacted by typical bullets were carried out.The impact process of the target was captured by X-ray and high-speed photography,and the ballistic resistance mechanism of transparent ceramic composite armor was analyzed.(3)Study on theoretical calculation of DOP of YAG transparent ceramic/glassConsidering the effect of projectile erosion to penetration process,the calculation model of penetration depth of projectiles impacting the transparent ceramic/aluminum alloy semiinfinite target and the glass/aluminum alloy semi-infinite target has been established.The model was validated by comparision with experiment results of(2).The influence of the conditions of the projectile and the target on the ballistic performance of transparent ceramics was analyzed.(4)Numerical study of ballistic performance of YAG transparent ceramic composite armor under impact of armor-piercing projectilesBased on public literature and processing of test results,JH-2 constitutive model parameters of YAG transparent ceramic were determined.Numerical simulations of experiments were conducted in AUTODYN.The results of penetration tests were compared with numerical results to verify the reliability of the constitutive parameters and the numerical model.The research on the ballistic performance of transparent ceramic composite armor with different structures was carried out,and the effects of layer thickness,circumferential restraintion and delamination on the ballistic performance of transparent ceramic composite armor were discussed.
