Along with the upsurge of China’s urbanization process,a new type of thematic exhibition hall with multiple functions such as city image publicity,city planning publicity,investment promotion platform,etc.--urban planning pavilion has gradually emerged in the past 20 years and grown rapidly.The rapid construction of the urban planning pavilion also exposes the problems such as the inability of the exhibition design to reflect the characteristics of the city.Therefore,it is particularly important to study the impact of exhibition design of urban planning pavilion on the public’s urban cognition from the perspective of visual communication.The author firstly analyzes the current situation and trend of exhibition design of urban planning museum,and points out that exhibition design is a communication activity based on visual information,and visual communication is based on visual cognition.Display design,therefore,need to understand the core content of city to show first,then the integrated use of different forms of display on the visual rendering,and then spread to the public through the visual form of aesthetic urban planning information,through effective visual communication,allow the public to understand the city,city,have good cognition on the city’s image.With the advent of the era of 5G,the exhibition design of urban planning pavilion will face a new round of transformation and challenges.New technical means will bring more visual communication effects to the exhibition design forms,which is more conducive to presenting the city image to the public.Secondly,from the perspective of visual communication,combined with the questionnaire survey,the paper analyzes the components of visual communication in the exhibition design of urban planning pavilion--the designer(communicator),the public,the visual communication media and their characteristics.It is believed that designers,as communicators,assume the role of "gatekeeper".They should have a deep understanding and screening of information,and use visual symbols to encode the information,so as to form a communication activity based on vision,so as to achieve the communication effect of visual persuasion.As the communication object,the public’s visual literacy and media preference also affect the visual communication effect and cognition of the city image.Therefore,the designer should pay attention to the media preference of the public when displaying the design,and achieve the purpose of spreading the city information and propagating the city image with the visual communication method he/she is interested in.In the visual media of display design,static visual media such as text,graphic pictures,objects,lighting and colors,as well as dynamic visual media such as video images and interactive experience play an important role in the visual communication process of display design in the urban planning museum.,summarized the characteristics of the above medium and summary,the writer found in static visual media,have design aesthetic feeling words can deepen the public impression of text messages,graphic images of features for intuitive,artistic and emotional triggers,physical objects and the characteristics of the display space for both is building the interdependence of the emotional space,light lighting features for the environment atmosphere build,color characteristics of emotional associations,dynamic characteristic for scene reconstruction of visual media and the audience the reshaping of the exhibition mode.Based on the characteristics of these visual media,the author analyzes the individual cases,and then elaborates the role and influence of the designers,the public and the visual media in the process of realizing the visual communication effect of the exhibition design of urban planning pavilion.Then,in the case investigation part,the author chooses guangzhou urban planning exhibition center as the investigation case.In the questionnaire survey,the author used likert scale to ask the respondents about the impact of static visual media information and high-tech dynamic visual media information of guangzhou urban planning exhibition center on the public perception of the city.Through the statistics of the survey,the author found that compared to static visual media(text,graphic,physical exhibition space,the light illumination,color,design),high-tech dynamic visual media though in absolute advantage in the visual shock,but as far as medium conveys cultural and emotional memory aspects than static visual media,as a result,while the new display technology can attract the audience’s curiosity and is willing to actively experience,but all forms should be based on the content,so as to form effective visual information transmission,to allow the public to the city’s image has certain positive cognition.Finally,based on a comprehensive summary of the previous research results,this paper proposes an improvement strategy for the exhibition design of the planning pavilion based on the public perception of the city.First,from the designer’s effective visual communication of display content,design strategies for different public,and communication strategies of visual information,this paper expounds the principles of improving visual communication of urban planning pavilion’s display design.Then from the three aspects of paying attention to the multi-dimensional expression of the city image and the city story,fully considering the characteristics and functions of different visual media,and the form should serve the content,the Suggestions of improving the exhibition design of the urban planning pavilion are presented.In short,as a disseminator of designers in the display design to content as the core,according to different demand of the public,with interesting,artistic quality of visual communication forms,purposeful to encode information,so as to achieve effective visual communication effect,thus influence public positive recognition of the city’s image.Based on the theory and practice related to exhibition design and visual communication,combined with the statistical analysis results of the questionnaire,this paper puts forward feasible ideas for the exhibition design method to improve the public’s cognition of the city,and makes positive exploration and Suggestions for the exhibition design of the exhibition hall in the future,so as to provide certain reference value and guiding significance.
