The essence of banking operation is risk management. In the context of modern commercial banking business becoming increasingly complex and digital transformation and upgrading, the task of banking risk management becomes more and more important. At the same time,China’s regulatory authorities also attach great importance to the risk prevention of commercial banks, the banking industry is increasingly strict supervision, coupled with the intensified competition in the banking industry, the risk management ability of commercial banks has become its survival and development of the core ability. However, from the perspective of the types of risks, operational risk is an endogenous, extensive, highly discrete and difficult to measure risk, which has been paid more and more attention by commercial banks. At present, the regulatory authorities pay more attention to operational risk, mainly because compared with market risk and credit risk,Operational risk is more common in commercial banks and runs through the whole business activities,so the prevention and control of operational risk is an important aspect of the long-term development of the banking industry. However,in terms of the causes of operational risks in banking activities, the role played by senior executives cannot be ignored. Therefore, from the perspective of the prevention and control of operational risks in banks, this paper focuses on the system of the internal management structure of the banking industry, and studies the influence of female executives’ psychology, average age, average educational background, average tenure and other characteristics on operational risk management of commercial banks, providing a new perspective for the prevention of operational risks.Firstly, from the perspectives of gender differences on risk preference, corporate governance and performance, and risk degree of banks, this paper summarizes domestic and foreign literature on female executives and operational risk of commercial banks, and discusses the research background and significance.Secondly, combining with the gender difference theory of psychology, resource dependence theory, corporate governance theory and other relevant theories about the impact of female executives on operational risk, discussing the influence mechanism of female executives’ characteristics on operational risk. Finally, while defining female executives and the operational risk of commercial banks, analyzing the variation tendency about female executives and operational risk management of modern commercial banks.Based on the above theoretical and trend analytical investigation, the annual data of 16 listed commercial banks including state-owned banks,joint-stock banks and urban commercial banks from 2013 to 2020 are selected, and STATA software is used to conduct empirical test and analysis. It concluded that the proportion of female executives and the average education level of female executives are inversely proportional to the operational risk level of commercial banks.Following put forward that commercial banks can appropriately increase the proportion of female executives to optimize the management structure and attach importance to the education level of female executives. These measures are conducive to improving the level of operational risk management of commercial banks.
