Effect Of Negative Body Image On Social Anxiety:coping Style And The Fear Of Negative Evaluation

With the development of the times,our material life is getting richer and richer,but the prevalence of mental disorders is increasing.China’s national Mental Health Development Report 2020 shows that the mental health index of teenagers is significantly lower than that of other age groups.Studies show that middle school students are troubled by interpersonal relationship,and social anxiety is a key problem,which has a profound impact on individual development.Studies show that adolescent middle school students pay high attention to themselves and pay special attention to the evaluation of others.Physical dissatisfaction is particularly common and prominent.Disordered body image can lead to social avoidance behavior and social anxiety.However,few studies have explored its internal mechanism.Based on the cognitive behavioral model of social anxiety,social comparison theory and socio-cultural model,this study explored the impact of negative body image on social anxiety and the role of fear of negative evaluation and coping style in middle school students.In order to enrich the understanding of negative body image and social anxiety,but also for the school to cultivate the positive body image of middle school students,improve the social anxiety situation to provide a feasible basis,and ultimately promote the mental health development of middle school students.This study selected 600 middle school students from grade one to grade three in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the subjects,using the Negative Physical Self Scale（NPSS）,The Adolescent Social Anxiety Scale（SAS-A）,Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale（BFNES）,and the Coping Style Scale.The results show that:1.The negative body image of female middle school students was significantly higher than that of male students.There are significant differences in negative body image of middle school students in origin and grade,and there is no significant difference between poor students and non-poor students.There are significant differences in gender and source of social anxiety in middle school,but there are no significant differences in grade,poverty.The fear of negative evaluation of middle school students only has significant difference in gender,and there is no significant difference in origin,grade,poverty or not.There are significant differences in coping styles of middle school students only in gender,and there are no significant differences in origin,grade,poverty or not.2.Negative body image,fear of negative evaluation,directed emotional coping and social anxiety were significantly correlated;Negative body image,social anxiety and directed problem coping were significantly negatively correlated.3.Negative body image of middle school students has a significant positive predictive effect on social anxiety.4.Fear of negative evaluation and negative coping style play a chain mediating role between negative body image and social anxiety.Fear of negative evaluation and positive coping play a chain mediating role between negative body image and social anxiety of middle school students.
