| Summarizing refers to retelling the gist of the passage by grasping the main points while getting rid of the redundancy.The summary instruction is an important reading strategy to get and summarize the main idea in a short time after a thorough comprehension of the context.It helps readers to grasp the main points of the article,understand the text,and cultivate the learners’ ability to use language.A large amount of literature shows that among all the summary instruction researches,most scholars hold a positive view on the strategy;they believed that as an instructive approach to teaching reading comprehension,it can effectively improve the students’ reading ability.After the literature review,the study found that the current research on summary instruction mainly focus on the Chinese writing and the English learning of the senior students in universities,middle schools and elementary schools,particularly on those special students of learning disability and low reading ability.However,there is few on cultivating the Chinese reading ability of ordinary students in Grade-three of elementary school.The fact is that summary instruction is necessary and even crucial for them in their third year,which is considered to be the critical period of reading comprehension,not to mention the other factors found in the research —curriculum standard,the reading ability and test,the trend of mind mapping,and the lack of summary instruction in the Chinese teaching.After an illustration of the summary instruction and the theory of Chinese reading ability training in primary school,this study explored the present situation of the application of summary instruction in the Chinese reading ability cultivation for Grade-three elementary school students through reading comprehension testing,questionnaire and interview.It analyzed the existing problems and reasons behind,then put forward the following suggestions in the case study: First,grasping the main points is to improve the students’ ability of extracting information;Second,browsing is to improve the students’ overall perception;Third,induction aims to cultivate students’ ability of interpretation;Forth,sorting aims to cultivate students’ ability to solve problems.Finally,the study summarized the results and the shortcomings of the research,with a hope of a more in-depth study in the future,so as to promote the summary instruction and the development of reading ability in the third grade student of primary school. |
