In April 1987,51 colleges recruiting high-level students and athletes were established for the first time.So far, there have been 287 universities to establish high-level sports teams, and 147 universities involved in track and field events. With the expansion of the team size,The strength of domestic high-level sports teams has been improved, but there is still a certain gap compared with foreign countries.Based on this, the sustainable development of competitive sports and high-level sports teams in universities are important branches of the cultivation of reserve talents for competitive sports,as a basic point of view.the literature method, logical analysis method, mathematical statistical method, comparative analysis method,Pareto analysis method, and item group theory, comparative advantage theory are used for research to analyze the evolution process, development pattern and development trend of the university’s high-level track and field sports teams. The conclusion of the study is as follows:1.There is a certain gap in the number of universities and university-run track and field teams in the six geographical regions of the country, but the development prospects are broad compared with foreign countries. At all times, universities withdrew from running track and field teams, but the number of teams in the six geographical regions showed an upward trend, reflecting the remarkable improvement in the competitive strength of the university’s high-level track and field sports teams. The number of participating universities has basically stabilized, but there is still one-third of the universities that did not participate in the competition. In terms of the number of previous participants, the ratio of men to women is basically around the 1: 1.5 range.2.The participating universities are divided into the first level, second level, third level, fourth level and fifth level according to the strength of the competition. The first level of participating universities is the most prominent in East China, and the three major areas of East China,North China and South China Of universities dominate the rankings of all projects,Especially women’s competition universities. In terms of overall competition strength, the Northeast,Southwest and Northwest regions are lower than those in East China,North China and South Central regions. The imbalance of competition strength in various regions is an important reason for the difficulty of forming competition alliances among regions.3.The comprehensive deployment of the participating projects is a powerful presentation of the strength of the competition. For example, among the top eight universities, the advantage groups of the three universities in North China are speed, endurance and fast strength item group, while the deployment of Hunan Normal University and Zhejiang University in male and female competitions is not comprehensive. However,it shows a strong competitive strength. The eight participating universities have relatively weak project groups(except Tsinghua University),potential advantage project groups and advantage project groups, but race walking, sprinting and hurdle projects are the shortcomings of the top eight universities.4.Less competition development is one of the main reasons for restricting the development of high-level track and field teams in universities. It takes a while for the current competition to be commercialized and multi-level competitions to be held. However,in addition to launching competitions in universities, the future source of students is the focus of follow-up research.
