BackgroundFor many women,it is a regular experience that daily activities are interrupted by thoughts about body appearance and image.Objectification theory holds that when women habitually self-monitor their physical appearance,it takes away their attention resources.Attention resources are limited,so how to coordinate and allocate attention resources reasonably involves attention control. At present, the relationship between body surveillance and attention control is unclear.ObjectiveOn the basis of objectification theory and attention control theory, the relationship between female body surveillance and attention control is discussed.MethodsIn the first study,70 female college students from a university in Xinxiang City,Henan Province, were recruited to complete the Stroop color naming experiment task, which can effectively predict the level of attention control ability, and use SPSS21.0 to analyze the reaction time and accuracy. In the second study,518 female college students from three universities in Henan Province were investigated by the method of convenient sampling using the body surveillance scale, flow scale, appearance anxiety scale and attention control scale.SPSS21.0 and SPSS Process 3.3 components were used for statistical analysis.Results(1)Body surveillance of female college students is significantly positively correlated with low attention control level(r=0.374,P<0.05);Body surveillance of female college students has a significant negative predictive effect on attention control(β=-0.187,P<0.001)).(2)Flow alone mediated the relationship between body surveillance and attention control(β=-0.062,P<0.05).The single mediating effect of appearance anxiety on the relationship between body surveillance and attention control was significant(β=-0.052,P<0.05).Flow and appearance anxiety played a significant role in the chain mediation between body surveillance and attention control(β=-0.004,P<0.05).Conclusion(1)Body surveillance of female college students is related to the impaired attention control.(2)Body surveillance of female college students affects attention control through the single mediating effects of flow and appearance anxiety and the chain mediation of flow and appearance anxiety.
