Youth Unemployment has been a challenge to so many economies especially to those in the developingcountries.The main purpose of this study was to examine the causes,Consequences and effects of youth unemployment in Wa West district of upper west Region.The study provides significant current information on youth unemployment in wa west,Ghana.The findings reveal that high illiteracy rate among youth,rural urban migration,lack of vocational skills,undermining of jobs by the youth,corruption by government officials etc.This study was limited to Ghana,wa west.A geographic sampling would better reflect the district profile.However,serious measures were taken to protect the identity of the respondents.Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed.The quantitative data on the youth were collected from 350 respondents in 14 communities while qualitative data on the youth were also collected through focus group discussions in the same communities.Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were respectively chosen to analyses the quantitative and qualitative data collected from the field.Among other things,the study indicated lack of vocational training or skills as a major cause of youth unemployment in Wa West district.The study identified causes,consequences employment in wa west,Ghana.All these may be enhanced through enterprising organizational and national human resource development capability.Suggestion was therefore made to the Government to have more youth trained in the vocational and technical skills aspect that will create jobs in the rural communities of Ghana.As matter of urgency,there is the need for government to address these problems in a manner through dialoguing with various stakeholders and also intensify public education on the Programme.This will ensure that,the Programme is sustainable in Ghana.Relating to the above is the finding by the study that the unemployed youth are mostly behind the political party agitations in the communities.Most of this youth do not have relatives around who could give them food.Therefore,any job that comes their way which could give them money is acceptable.However,as they tend to engage themselves in such activities,they put everybody in the community at risk.The study therefore concludes that anti-social activities of the unemployed youth is a serious security concern. |
