In recent years, the number of international students coming to China is increasing. However,in the process of studying in China, the problems of international students are appearing. The contradiction between the continuous expansion of the scale and the quality of education for international students has aroused widespread concern in the society. The current studies focus on the cross-cultural adaptation of the international students in the micro level, and the management and institutional mechanisms in the macro level, while neglect their personal development.Based on the Student Development Theory, the educational philosophy of "student-centered" has been recognized widely by the society.Guided by this theory, the learning outcomes have gradually become an important indicator of evaluating the quality of students’ study and development and the ruler of measuring the quality of education. Thus, this paper studies the learning outcomes of international students studying in China and its influence factors,so as to clarify the current situation of education for international students, clears the factors that influence their learning outcomes and puts forward some reasonable suggestions. On the one hand, this study can further enrich the relevant research of international students in China. On the other hand,it can also provide some suggestions for J University to improve the management and service of international students so that their learning outcomes can be enhanced. We hope that the research can also provide some references for the development of higher education for international students in other domestic universities.Based on the Student Developmental Theory and College Impact Models and from the perspective of self-evaluation of international students, this study analyzes the learning outcomes from the four dimensions, which including language ability, professional ability, general skill and cross-cultural ability, and then explores its influence factors,by using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. This study used a typical and representative J University as a case, investigated 270 international students in J University, obtained 256 valid questionnaires and interviewed with 10 international students. The main findings are as follow:(1)Generally speaking, the learning outcomes of international students are good and the score is 3.11(out of 4),but there are differences in the four dimensions, among which, the learning outcomes of language ability is the highest, followed by the cross-cultural ability and general skill, and the learning outcomes of professional ability is the lowest;(2)Individual factors such as age, parental education background, learning hierarchy, major and the number of Chinese friends will affect the learning outcomes of international students;(3)The educational process such as active learning, interpersonal interaction, enriching educational experience, level of academic challenge and supportive campus environment have a positive impact on the learning outcomes of international students, however, there are some differences among the dimension and degree of the learning outcomes.Based on these empirical findings, the following recommendations are made to improve the learning outcomes of international students.J University should give high priority to curriculum construction to meet the learning needs of international students;optimize the training program for international students and ensure a reasonable level of academic challenge;improve teaching methods to enhance student’s classroom participation;strengthen the physical and mental health support and service in order to promote the physical and mental health development of international students;arrange accommodation and student activities reasonably to promote the campus integration of international students.J University should improve the teaching management and logistics management of international students through these specific measures. The international students should boost their confidence to improve their initiative and autonomy in learning;actively participate in campus activities to enrich their educational experience;overcome the obstacles and broaden the network of interpersonal interaction.
