China and Myanmar are linked by mountains and rivers,the friendship between the two countries dates back to antiquity.Lashio is an important political,economic,cultural and transportation center in northern Myanmar,and also an important city with huge Chinese community.Chinese language and culture education,Chinese community and Chinese media,known as the "three treasures" of overseas Chinese,which are maintaining continuing of Chinese community.After a hundred years of rough development,the Chinese language and culture education in Myanmar is still standing here with the enthusiastic support of the Chinese community,and with the further development of relationship between China and Myanmar,Chinese language and culture education are valued by China.However,the overseas Chinese language and culture education policy implemented by China are sometimes misinterpreted by western world,the Myanmar government also has suspicion to ethnic Chinese and Chinese language and culture education,there is misunderstanding about Chinese language and culture education in Myanmar.This study aims at the ethnography of Kowen High School,which is famous in Northern Myanmar,to show their practice of Chinese language and culture education under the political and social background in Myanmar.And show how Chinese language and culture education shapes the identity,personality and consciousness of educatees between ethnic identity and national identity,so as to present the real situation of a Chinese school.In the first chapter,presenting the development of Chinese language and culture education in Lashio under the macroscopic historical and social background.In this study,the immigration history of the Chinese people,the internal and external political environment of Myanmar and the social structure of the Chinese people are important backgrounds of the practice of Chinese language and culture education.While the marginalization of ethnic Chinese in Myanmar,Chinese language and culture education was developed as a tool for coping with nationalism.In the second chapter,showing the different roles in Kowen High School.Administrators,teachers,parents and students are all actors who participate in Chinese language and culture education.They devote themselves to Chinese language and culture education based on their own ideas and needs,so as to sustain the Chinese school.The third chapter shows how the above actors carry out educational practice in the school.Through curriculum teaching and public ritual,this school spreads the Chinese language and culture,morality and ethics,behavior patterns,reproducing Chinese community,and connecting to China by Chinese language and culture education.In the mean time,it’s also developing an national identity.In the fourth chapter,analyzing how the Chinese in Lashio deal with the relationship between national identity and ethnic identity in the practice of Chinese language and culture education,to prove that national identity and ethnic identity are compatible but not opposite and conflicting;The study also make practical Suggestions to Kowen High School,and it discuss the scholing in Kowen from theprespective of field and reproduction perspective.At last,the study against conspiracy theories from western media,the facts insuggest that Chinese language and culture education is self-requirement of local Chinese community,not manipulated by China. |
