Report On Terminology Translation For WCF Rules Of Curling

The terminology of a subject is the set of special words and expressions used in connection with it.Standardization of terminology is significant to the growth of a professional field.Ever since Beijing was chosen as the host of the 2022 Winter Olympics,winter sports in China have seen unprecedented growth.Nonetheless,many winter sports still lag behind in terms of their building of a localized system of rules and terminologies.In 2018,the World Curling Federation(WCF)released its latest version of The Rules of Curling.Soon after the release,an official team was organized by the Chinese Curling Association(CCA)to translate the rules into Chinese and make amendments to Chinese curling terminology.This report is based on the author’s involvement in this translation project.Taking the 2018 WCF curling terminology as the research object,this report makes a functional classification of curling terms and probes into the major translation problems of the previous version of Chinese curling terminology.Taking into consideration China’s realities in curling development and the ontological features of curling terms,this report,under the guidance of terminology theory,proposes that curling terminology translation should follow the rules of “systematization” “conventionality” “monosemy” “conciseness” and “transparency” to set up a coherent and scientific terminological system.On this basis,in the translation of the three categories of curling terms,namely technical & tactical terms,competition terms,and sheet & equipment terms,concrete translation methods such as paraphrasing,transference,loan translation,translation with notes and semantic compensation are introduced respectively so as to ensure that the new translations can represent curling concepts in an accurate manner and form a coherent system well adapted to the realities in China.Major findings from this report will hopefully shed light on the establishment of terminological system of other winter sports and contribute to Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics as well.
