Purpose: To investigate the effect and physiology mechanism of rest-redistribution and traditional sets by measuring kinetic performance and fatigue during and after passive knee flexion exercise.Method: In a counter-balanced fashion 7 days apart,11 healthy males performed two protocols of 40 maximal-effort resisted passive knee flexion exercise with 285 seconds of total rest. The traditional set protocol(TS)included 4 sets of 10 repetitions with 95 seconds inter-set rest, and the rest-redistribution protocol(RR)included 20 sets of 2 with 15 seconds of inter-set rest.Baseline measures and eccentric exercise were executed on Monday, followed by fatigue data monitoring on the rest workdays of the week.Torque and total work were used to evaluate sport performance with tissue oximetry assessed throughout each protocol to detect local circulation and oxygen consumption.RPE was required during the training.Post-testing was performed in order at 1min for strength tests,2min for tensiomyography,12 min for ultrasonography,17 min for ROM and 20 min for muscle sorness after the last repetition completed.Post-test measurements were taken again at 24,48,72,and 96 hours post testing in the same order.Tensiomyography and ultrasound were used to determine the muscle contractile function and muscle morphology.Strength tests,ROM and muscle soreness were used to determine functional ability.Excel,Graphpad Prism 5 and Image J were used to unscrambling data after experiment followed by data analysis with SPSS and JASP.Result: Rest-redistribution sets maintained force development ability during eccentric exercise(p<0.05)with decline of tissue saturation(p<0.05)but caused no significant difference in total work(p>0.05),total hemoglobin concentration(p>0.05)or RPE(p>0.05)compared to traditional set.No inter-set difference were found after eccentric exercise in contractile and functional ability, muscle morphology,ROM or muscle soreness(p>0.05).Conclusion: Rest-redistribution contributed to maintenance of kinetic performance and increase of metabolic response during high intensity eccentric exercise. Its effect on fatigue was similar to traditional sets.Muscle morphology,ROM and muscle soreness showed significant fatigue sign after eccentric exercise, whereas muscle functional ability got maintained.
