Research On Narrative Characteristics Of American Basketball Films

Based on the perspective of film narratology,this paper analyzes and studies the narrative structure,narrative theme,narrative time,narrative space and viewpoint of American basketball films by using literature research method,content analysis method,and methodology of structuralist narratology.Based on the development history of American Hollywood movies,the historical background of American society,the evolution of basketball game and basketball movies,this paper divides the development history of American basketball movies into four historical stages.At the same time,combining with the corresponding American social history background,the characteristics of narrative structure,narrative time and narrative space in each stage of basketball films are analyzed and summarized,racial and gender discrimination problems in basketball films are discussed,too.This paper found that,with the development of Hollywood film industry and the development of basketball game,the narrative theme of basketball films is gradually commercialized and entertaining.In terms of role setting,the status of black and female characters in American basketball movies was influenced by the African-American civil rights movement and feminist movement in American history.In some stages,black and female characters received enough attention in basketball movies,but this kind of change is fluctuation,show apparent times characteristic.In terms of narrative structure,American basketball movies have developed from linear narrative structure of causality to narrative structure of multiple clues.In terms of the time of narration,American basketball movies have more diversified time clues to tell the story,control the rhythm of narration,set up suspense and create a tense narrative atmosphere in basketball matches.In addition,American basketball movies are good at constructing narrative space through some specific "symbols",while in most of the movies about black basketball,these "symbols" imperceptibly shaped negative stereotypes of black people.Compare with Chinese basketball films,the development process of American basketball movies show the evolution of the narrative structure,narrative time and space,including the metaphor of social reality in the movie,shaping of basketball culture,etc.These have certain reference significance to the creation and development of Chinese basketball films.
