| In Europe and the United States, populism and ethnic conflicts are currently prevalent, and identity politics has once again become an important theme in the construction and development of contemporary multi-ethnic nations. After a series of incidents such as "Black Lives Matter","Floyd’s death" and "the attack on Asians",the dilemma of identity politics in the United States has become increasingly prominent. After the outbreak of a series of incidents such as "Black Lives Matter," "Floyd’s death," and "Asian assault," the dilemma of identity politics in the United States has become more and more prominent, and then has become a proposition of the times that has been intensely explored by academics at home and abroad. The purpose of this paper is to examine the identity politics dilemma in the United States from the perspectives of "multiculturalism" and "relative deprivation",with the aim of providing some reference for the identity politics of other multi-ethnic countries. The establishment of the concept of identity politics is a product of the nation-state era.The attacks on Asians highlight two sources of identity politics dilemma in the United States: one is the intricate network of interests that deviates from the principle of multiculturalism;the other is the intensification of the sense of relative deprivation that leads to the extension of inter-ethnic conflict of interests. Therefore,to reflect on the dilemma of American identity politics,we can start from two aspects: first,to adjust multiculturalism and national identity, and to increase the identity of all ethnic groups to the national citizenship;second,to balance ethnic interests and citizens’ rights and interests,to promote the benign operation of democratic politics to ensure citizens’ rights and interests, and to explore the system and policies that truly meet the objective reality of America from the perspective of national interests and people’s interests. The orderly functioning of democratic politics is an inevitable choice for the modern nation-state.However,there is a distance between the goals pursued by American identity politics and the practices it realistically seeks to achieve. In the current reality, the problem of American identity politics will remain for a long time to come. |
