This translation practice report takes The Book of Australia(Chapter 12 Education,Employment and Training)published by Hodder and Stoughton(Australia)in 1990 as the source text. This chapter introduces the reforms in the education, employment and training systems made by the Australian government in the 1990 s,the corresponding policies formulated,as well as at the current structure and condition of each sector. The source text belongs to the category of informative texts.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory, the translator analyzed and discussed the source text at lexical, syntactical and textual levels.Firstly,in terms of lexical translation, the translator adopted the methods of amplification and conversion to ensure that the translation conforms to the Chinese expression. For the translation of proper nouns in the source text, the translator adopted the methods of loan translation and contextual analysis. At the syntactical level, the translator split the long and difficult sentences in the text and adjusted their word order by adopting the methods of division and inversion, especially for those sentences with dashes,so that they could be more easily understood by the target language readers. Finally,at the textual level, the translator analyzed the cohesion and coherence of the text from the perspective of contextual cohesion and logical coherence,so as to ensure the smoothness of the translation.
