The Australian author Elizabeth Jolley has a prominent place in the literary world and her work is highly regarded. The text of this translation practice is an excerpt from Elizabeth Jolley’s short story Five Acre Virgin and Other Stories. The translator chooses four of these stories, namely Winter Nelis,The Outworks of the Kingdom,The Long Distant Lecture and The Fellow Passenger. These four stories have broadly similar characteristics yet each has its own distinctive features.Firstly, the translator chooses Peter Newmark’s theory of semantic and communicative translation as a guide to analyse communicative translation used for conversion of parts of speech and long clause translation used for semantic translation. Then, the translator summarizes and concludes from six aspects such as conversion of noun into verb, conversion of preposition into verb, conversion of adjective into noun, restrictive relative clause, adverbial clause of condition and adverbial clause of concession to form a translation practice report, which hopefully can reproduce the literary color of the original. The translator hopes to provide some references for researchers of Five Acre Virgin and Other Stories.
