This translation report is about the English-Chinese translation practice of the descriptive grammar book A Student’s Introduction to English Grammar and selects chapters 12 and 13 as source text,which mainly introduces the grammar of grade and non-finite clauses.The authors of this book are Rodney Huddleston and Jeffrey K.Pullman,and both of them are devoted to the study of the English language.This translation practice report mainly has four parts.The first part introduces the background information: the significance of the study,the background,an introduction to the authors and the layout of the report.The translation process is the subject of the report’s second section.The third chapter deals with the issues that arise during translation,analyzing them from a lexical and syntactic view.From a lexical perspective,annotation and literal translation are given to translate terms,whereas the method of the restoration is adopted to translate pronouns.And the semantic logic is straightened out by using amplification.At the syntactic level,the translation of attributive clauses is reached by pre-modifier and post-modifier,and the approach of syntactic restructuring and division are applied to translate long and difficult sentences.Finally,this section is devoted to the achievements,limitations and reflection of translation practice.By summarizing and analyzing the difficulties of descriptive grammar,this translation report is aimed at mastering their characteristics and incorporating translation skills to solve problems through classification,thus providing some guidance on the translation of such texts and the application of translation techniques.Also,the translator aims that the translation of this text can raise more people’s attention to descriptive grammar and give a slight contribution to the dissemination of descriptive grammar.
