In today’s eclectic cultural system, decorativity as an expression of the artistic language of painting presents unique artistic characteristics, reflecting both the state of social development and the different characteristics of the times. In the mid-to-late nineteenth century, decorative art flourished, and in parallel with it,various schools began to take the art scene. The Nabis were a group of young painters founded in Paris in the late 19 th century,of which Edouard Vuillard was a key member(hereafter referred to as Vuillard).Vuillard’s decorative style of painting was heavily influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e,featuring decorative colours and highly decorative and aesthetically pleasing images. He was extremely observant and able to give a special meaning to ordinary things and express them in his paintings, often depicting a scene in an interior room, always with a warm and harmonious beauty.Vuillard’s unique compositions, fluid brushwork and delicate, soft tones in his paintings of interior scenes with female subjects are vivid and touching.Vuillard’s distinctive decorative art style not only influenced the later Art Nouveau movement, but also provided a profound inspiration for the style of contemporary painters today. To explore the decorative elements of Vuillard’s paintings of interior scenes is to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of contemporary oil painting. This topic is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly introduces the background of the times, the purpose and significance of the topic, the content and methodology of the study, and the innovative points of the study. The second part introduces the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e on Vuillard’s decorative style, and discusses the borrowings of Vuillard’s decorative style from ukiyo-e in terms of asymmetrical composition, flat decorative images, and single-line outlining and flat painting techniques. The third part explores the artistic features of Vuillard’s decorative language in the painting of interior scenes in terms of close-up composition, the choice of female subjects, and subjective decorative colours. In the fourth part, the author combines his own creative practice to illustrate the inspiration and influence of the decorative language in Vuillard’s paintings of interior scenes.Through the analysis of Vuillard’s decorative language and the experimentation of his own practice,he will in turn gain a clearer and deeper understanding of Vuillard’s decorative style, opening up new paths for the diversification of forms in his future artistic creation.
