| The Chinese to English(C-E)consecutive interpreting(CI)experiment of this dissertation investigates how the register level impacts the interpreting performance of student interpreters and machine interpreting applications,using Haiqin Sun and Ailing Zhang’s register classification and Chengshu Yang’s interpreting evaluation criteria as theoretical underpinnings.This research divided the experimental materials into three registers,namely the extremely style(high register)and the formal style(intermediate register),and a relatively informal register(low register).The speeches of native Chinese in three different registers were selected as experimental materials.Ten student interpreters were invited(only nine student’ interpretations met the experimental requirements)and two machine interpreting applications were used for CI experiments.Furthermore,their performances were evaluated and analyzed.Therefore,this thesis puts forward the following two research questions:Question 1: What are the relations between different levels of register and the interpreting quality of student interpreters and that of machine interpreting applications?Question 2: Among the three different registers,which of the student interpreters and machine interpreting applications performs better in equivalence with the source language(SL)?The following hypotheses can be advanced in response to the experiment’s research questions:Hypothesis 1: The register level will affect the interpreting quality of student interpreters and machine interpreting applications to a certain extent.Hypothesis 2: The register level is positively correlated with student interpreters and machine interpreting applications’ fidelity,delivery,language,and overall performance.Hypothesis 3: In different registers,the equivalence of the SL register and the target language(TL)register of the student interpreters is higher than that of the machine interpreting applications.This study quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed the impact of register level and register parameters on the interpreting quality of student interpreters and machine applications.The study investigated the relationship between different register levels and the interpreting fidelity,delivery,language,and overall performance scores of student interpreters and machine interpreting applications using register levels as an independent variable.In addition,this study qualitatively analyzed whether student interpreters and machine interpreting applications could achieve equivalence with the SL in different registers to explore its impact on the quality of interpreting.Through data analysis,observation of tables,and examination of examples,the following conclusions were drawn:Hypothesis 1 is supported.The register level will affect the interpreting quality of student interpreters and machine interpreting applications to a certain extent.Hypothesis 2 is partially supported.The fidelity of student interpreters is positively correlated with the level of register.The fidelity,delivery,and overall performance of machine interpreting applications are positively correlated with register level.The other items do not conform to this assumption.Hypothesis 3 is supported.From the perspective of the four register parameters,the equivalence of the SL register and the TL register of the student interpreters is generally higher than that of the machine interpreting applications in all three registers.Furthermore,this research also explored the reasons for the significant discrepancies between student interpreters’ performance and machine interpreting applications’ performance across different registers.Finally,according to the reasons for the discrepancies,this thesis put forward some suggestions for machine interpreting applications and student interpreters. |
