The Study On The Types And Functions Of Long And Short Nouns In Modern Chinese

Two-syllable nouns,also known as long words,are the basic members of modern Chinese nouns,with a stable status and strong internal consistency.Two-syllable nouns have the typical characteristics of nouns,and their character of noun is generally stronger.Monosyllabic nouns,which called short nouns,are polarized,some monosyllabic nouns represent basic things,they are used frequently and have a stable status,they have typical characteristics of nouns,such as person,dog,car,etc.Such monosyllabic nouns have no corresponding homomorphic synonymous disyllabic nouns,and called them C-type short nouns.C-type short nouns ’s functions of noun are powerful and stable;another part of monosyllabic nouns is generally weak in character of noun and they are often on the edge of the noun category,and even occurs "decategorization".This type of monosyllabic nouns have corresponding homomorphic and synonymous disyllabic nouns.This paper divides long nouns into two categories according to the morphemes of long nouns: A-type long nouns and B-type long nouns.A-type long nouns correspond to two-syllable nouns ending in "子",and category-B long nouns correspond to two-syllable nouns ending in non-"子".This paper compares the syntactic functions of class A long and short nouns and class B long and short nouns,and then summarizes the morphological and semantic features of long and short nouns.It further discusses the difference between the two subordinate types of nouns-A-type short nouns and B-type short nouns.The specific contents are as follows:The first chapter,the introduction,mainly summarizes the current research status and deficiencies of long and short nouns;In the second and third chapters,a detailed comparison of the main syntactic functions of long and short nouns is carried out,and it is found that short nouns generally showing the development trend of "decategorization";The fourth and fifth chapters respectively describe the characteristics and mechanisms of "morphemization" and "quantification" of monosyllabic words in more detail;The sixth chapter divides the sub-categories of monosyllabic words and tries to analyze the reasons for the differences in the functions of long and short nouns.Through the above investigation,this paper intends to explore the reverse evolution of disyllabicization of words—the evolution characteristics and mechanism of morphemization,the characteristics and mechanism of noun quantification.In addition,we hope to further clarify the relationship between the word length and function of nouns through this study.
