The aim of the thesis is to examine the remaining landscape frescoes excavated in Pompeii and its surrounding cities,which appeared from approximately 200 BCE to 79 A.D,the period of the Roman Republic to the Imperial period.The representation of landscape in ancient Roman frescoes predates the Renaissance landscape in the general,but in which the viewer examines the landscape in a totally different way where subject-object relationship is more flexible.This paper tends to discover the cultural and artistic significance based on the physical and geographical conditions and historical background of ancient Roman civilization.To figure out the origins of Roman visual art in relation to the multiple influences from Mediterranean,this paper studies various culture and view the meaning of frescoes based on the historical context and social values of ancient Rome.Cases from several regions would cover he subject matter of landscapes in fresco,including garden scenes,architectural scenes,pastoral landscapes,mythological landscapes,seascapes etc.It also includes landscape with narration,landscapes that appears to be backgrounds,and landscapes within painted frames or panels.The intriguing appearance of landscapes in Roman houses is not only based on the imitation of Greek palace gardens,but also on the desire to introduce natural scenery and courtyard scenes into the interior spaces,as well as visually expanding interior spaces,or amusing and pleasuring the views by the beauty from nature.The study will focus on Roman landscape frescoes,while apply the notion of landscape as an entry point to discover and analyze the aesthetic experience of the viewer and the cultural significance of landscape wall painting,employing the modern perspective to explore the value of landscape painting in the ancient Roman world.
