| Western landscape painting primarily originated in the Hellenistic period,the style of which well developed in the Roman art.A large number of Pompeii murals indicate their Hellenistic beginning.The Roman landscape is also deeply influenced by the Greek pastoral poetry,especially those of Theokritos,and the visual space constructed by Virgil,Horace and other poets on the basis of the text bring the viewer’s imagination into a pictorial model,which has led to the exploration of the concept of "ut pictura poesis".During the Augustus period,two major themes of landscape painting were developed,namely the sacred idyllic landscape and architectural landscape.The former is presented on the one hand in the form of pictures in the private and public spaces.This is not only the embodiment of Augustus’s personal personality but also its political symbol.On the other hand,the sacred idyllic landscape also serves as a visual image of poets in the context.The architectural landscape of this period was separated from the literary background and was based on a visual principle.At the time,it was mainly present in the friezes.The two villas of Farnesina and Livia witnessed the innovation and development of the Roman landscape,and introduced the discussion of Studius.According to the descriptions of Pliny and Vitruvius and the study of Studius’s painting style,the thesis demonstrates that he was the founder of the Roman landscape and his outstanding contribution to the landscape painting influenced the Renaissance and the 17th century.In addition,the Roman artist in the comprehensive use of Greek art has also created a single panel of continuous narrative that is different from the narrative style of Greek friezes,which has created a lifelike effect of space.These are Roman achievements.This article is divided into four chapters to explore the ancient Roman landscape.The first chapter gives a detailed discussion of the Hellenistic origin of Roman landscape painting;the second takes the development of Roman landscape painting as a clue,and discusses it from ancient Rome literature and painting,and two landscape types;the third explores the founder of Rome landscape painting,Studius,his landscape types,techniques and achievements;the fourth chapter elaborates the artistic features of Roman landscape painting,namely the continuous narrative and illusion artistic techniques. |
