| He Shaoji was a very important calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty. He was wealthy in knowledge and traveled all over the north and south. And he had a family origin that ordinary people could hardly reach. His father,He Linghan, was the third place in imperial examination in his early years and was honored in high status. As he became more and more knowledgeable and his position became higher and higher,he was strict with his four sons. The concept of "horizontal and vertical" not only affected He Shaoji’s learning, but also deeply reflected in his pursuit of calligraphy. He Shaoji was also far more knowledgeable than his peers. At a very young age,he drew nourishment from the fertile land of Huxiang and Qilu, which was enough to nourish the source of his creation. At the same time, his life experience was rough. He missed the number one scholar because of‘language defects’,which made him almost suffered from a disaster, and he was dismissed due to scheduling current affairs. His twin brother He Shaoye died young and his father also died. The difficult situation made his family in trouble and the family members died one after another. However, all of these just sharpened his sentiment and will, and made him burst out with extremely rich creative enthusiasm. The complex emotions and the worries of family and country gathered, which naturally manifested as a kind of pen and ink that was different from pure beauty, and it was thick and dignified, vigorous and majestic and had broad meaning. And this is why we are able to appreciate the beauty of He Shaoji’s diverse calligraphy today. He Shaoji lived through four dynasties. From the first year of Tongzhi to the twelfth year of Tongzhi,he spent the last time in his life. And it was also the best twelve years for him to get his personality and calligraphy well-developed.Experience is wealth! As we can see,the influence of his father, the edification of his teacher Ruan Yuan, and his early-aged travels,middle-aged officials,old-agend lectures all made him.The circle of his friends was so wide and his knowledge was so deep, and his whole life was infiltrated.Once it settled,it would get a vigorous growth. He Shaoji started learning calligraphy from the copybook, covered a wide range of ancient books on gold and stone, and widely visited the inscriptions on precipices and tablets. He did the rubbings all by himself and did a lot of repeated textual research. And he did the copying every day that you could hardly see him without a book in hand, which finally lead to the integration of inscriptions and rubbings. What he persevered in all his life is the tact and strength of Yan Zhenqing’s Zhengzuowei Tie,the integrity and simplicity of Zhangqian tablet, the preciseness and danger of Daoyin tablet, the frankness and gallantry of Su Shi,and the preciseness and surging of Huang Tingjian. His view of integration of inscriptions and calligraphy, his unique scholarship and calligraphy practice,is worthy of our continuous study and inquiry. |
