From Matter To Form-Research On The Evolution Of Western Painting Boundary In The 20th Century

Traditional researches on the development of painting take historical background and literary thoughts as the forewords and pay attention to establishing the contextual relationship between painting and its rooted environment.This paper attempts to pay attention to the development of painting in the 20 th century with different research methods from the traditional ones,hoping to explore more possibilities for the development of painting by studying the development of painting boundary.According to the different external representation forms of the painting boundary,this paper divides the boundary development into three periods: physical period,plane form period and expanding form period,then discusses the semantic transformation of the boundary under different representation forms and the law of the interaction between the boundary and the development of painting.In the physical period,painting and the frame as the boundary are simplified and developed at the same time.As the frame structure is reduced to a thin and narrow frame,the formal semantics of the boundary is gradually highlighted.In the development of abstract art,the boundary form does not adapt to the painting form.In this period,it leads to the conclusion that the original form of painting base has a certain restrictive influence on painting creation;The plane form period specifically discusses the further form simplification research carried out by minimalist artists on the basis of recognizing the original form of the base,it leads the development of painting into two directions-"theatrical" art and the painting art with harmonious relationship between boundary and painting.The conclusion of the plane form period is that minimalist artists break through the bondage of the original form of the bottom frame material and completely change the external representation of the boundary from material object to form.It also has a certain impact on the graphic figurative painting art;In the period of expanding form,this paper analyzes the integration of boundary and painting development in the cross media context,discusses the rich development of boundary semantics and the new trend of boundary form expanding from plane to space,explains that the boundary development in the period of plane form is one of the reasons for the cross media development of painting.Finally,the article summarizes the law of the development of the relationship between boundary and painting,analyzes that there may be more possibilities for the development of painting in the cross media context.
