Illustrations which conform to the laws of students’ cognitive development are an important part of textbooks,and are explanatory pictures designed based on the text content.In addition to explaining the content of the text,textbook illustrations also play a role in improving students’ enthusiasm for learning and deepening students’ memory of the learning content,which fully reflects the importance of illustrations in teaching.Making full use of textbook illustrations in the teaching process is conducive to improving students’ learning.This research takes the illustrations of Primary English textbook of Yilin version as the research object.The author adopts such methodologies as questionnaires,literature analysis,classroom observation and interviews to explore middle-grade teachers and students’ cognition and attitude towards textbook illustrations,to investigate the using procedure of schoolbook illustrations and to find the problems when teachers apply textbook illustrations in teaching.And effective solutions and suggestions will be thrown out based on the problems.This research is expected to provide some guidance for the illustration teaching practice of front-line English teachers in primary schools.The research shows that 1)most teachers and students think highly of the educational importance of textbook illustrations;2)teachers and students focus on textbook illustrations before class;3)teachers and students present textbook illustrations primarily by using multimedia;4)teachers generally explain textbook illustrations by asking questions after students reading textbook illustrations themselves;5)teachers use textbook illustrations mainly in reading instruction;6)some problems in the use process still exist: the low use of textbook illustrations in teaching,the lack of digging into textbook illustrations and insufficient consideration of students’ perceptions;7)textbook illustrations contributes to teaching,but it is still subject to various factors.On account of the above research,the author holds that teachers are supposed to raise the consciousness of the employment of textbook illustrations,strengthen the theoretical study of textbook illustrations,and optimize the process of textbook illustrations-assisted teaching.
