In Chinese history,traditional myth has always played an important and multifaceted role in the construction of Chinese national culture.Not only does it portray a bizarre and fascinating mythical world,it also expresses metaphorically a view of the real world.At present,the society is becoming more and more focused on how to tell ancient mythology in a modern way,which makes the balance between expressions of imagination,reality,and culture an essential issue in mythretelling.Since 2015,myth-retelling has once again become a popular theme in animation films.A series of animation films represented by " Monkey King: Hero is Back" and " Nezha: Birth of the Demon Child" have made innovations in terms of story,animaiton symbols,and space.The spatial innovations especially provide mythical narratives with novel ideas,showing the developments in mythical thinking of these films.Therefore,this thesis will start from the characteristics of mythical spatial reconstruction in animated form,combine the specific cultural context of the film’s creation,and summarize and analyze the spatial reconstruction characteristics and cultural significance by comparing them with the spatial characteristics of previous mythological film and television works.The first chapter will define myth-retelling in terms of both mythological concepts and the history of Chinese myth-retelling.Not all mythological adaptation works meet the definition of "retelling";mythological retelling places more emphasis on the reinterpretation of mythological nature and myth-related culture,aiming to liberate rigid mythical symbols and objects.The objects of myth-retelling are not only classic myth literature,but also previous mythological adaptations,in both text and image form.Therefore,summarizing the spatial characteristics of ancient myths and analyzing the history of mythological spatial reconstruction accordingly is the basis for subsequent research.The second chapter will summarize the spatial reconstruction patterns of substance space and social space in myth-retelling films.The pattern of substance spatial reconstruciton is concluded from the comparison of mythical space in films with literary space and space paradigm in former myth-retelling works.Objects of these analysis include divine space and real space.The analysis of social space takes the Chinese traditional social relations as the comparison object,summarizes variations of social relations revealed in the process of myth-retelling.This chapter will as well discuss the changes on styles of animaiton spatial symbols,concluding various strategies of animated spatial reconstruction.The third chapter will further analyze the influence of the film’s spatial reconstruction style on mythological narratives and cultural expressions on the basis of the summary of spatial reconstruction patterns.Mythology and traditional culture,as the traditional double theme of mythological retelling practice in China,are undoubtedly more important today when the emphasis is on making good cultural narratives and coping with cultural invasion.This chapter will analyze how the film’s spatial reconstruction has played a role in liberating mythological symbols,expressing Chinese mythological thinking,and expressing national culture,and what its achievements and shortcomings are.
