The translation material is extracted from Chinese Buddhism: A Volume of Sketches,Historical,Descriptive and Critical(short for Chinese Buddhism). The book was written by Joseph Edkins,a famous English missionary and Sinologist. It was published in 1880 and there is no Chinese version of it.This work describes the development of Chinese Buddhism and presents the eastern religious culture to the western readers. The work contains 24 chapters, and the translator mainly translated chapters ten to thirteen with a total of 12,350 words in English.Chapters ten to thirteen of this book focuses on major festivals and Bodhisattvas of Chinese Buddhism, the relationship between Buddhism and ancient India, the Buddhist universe, and the expanded cosmic world of northern Buddhists. The author depicts the development of Chinese Buddhism in objective language and in a gentle tone. This translation report is guided by the framework of comprehension, expression, and adaptation(CEA)proposed by Li Changshuan to make translation-cases’ analyzes. At the level of comprehension, there are a lot of Buddhist terms and background knowledge in the source text,so it is difficult to translate. The translator solved this problem by consulting the Internet and Buddhist books as a way to supplement relevant Buddhist knowledge. At the level of expression, the biggest difficulty in translation lies in the great differences between English and Chinese. The translator made the translation smooth and reader-friendly by being faithful to the original text and fitting the style of it.At the level of adaptation, the two languages are not entirely equivalent,so the translator used the method of amplification to add information to the translation so as to bridge the cultural defaults;the method of omission was also employed to delete the redundant information appropriately.By doing so,the target text readers can understand the content of the source text quickly and increase the readability of the translation.Through this translation practice, the translator has gained further comprehension of Buddhist literature translation, and understood that flexible use of translation techniques can enable the translation more in line with the reading habits of the target text readers. The translator hopes that this report can provide reference for relative translators and the Buddhist researchers.
