This article discusses portrait painting as a form of philosophy and art,and captures as much as possible what we usually regard as the extension of portrait art.Through the investigation of portrait research in art history,we explore the thinking and theory about the intertwining of portraits and other disciplines in the contemporary context.In the first part of my paper,the development and transformation of the portrait painting are discussed,and the main reasons and functional connotations of their development are recognized.When talking about the overwhelming power of photography and images to show people,it affirms the important position of portraits in art history.In the second half of my paper to discuss the various definitions of portrait painting to clarify the essence of the portrait.Reconstructing the different properties of portrait art with philosophical conception,expressing that the behaviour of the portrait makes subjective things objectively visible and complex.The last chapter attempts to show the connection between the portrait and cognition.Portrait is a social art that "representation of the structure of human relationships" and "response to natural human tendencies".Contemporary portraits depict "self" to present and think about "self",which is usually not to be understood metaphorical art.Modern portraits,as the function of facial recognition and interactive therapy,reveal their application in the development of contemporary human social.Finally,this paper provides another perspective on the development of portrait painting in today’s era with the cross-structures constructed in art history,philosophy and other theories,so as to reflect on the progress of Chinese portraits today.
