Learning power is an effective way to cultivate learners to "learn to learn".It is the cornerstone of success and one of the important skills for students to enter the society in the future,which has been put forward and studied frequently in the field of education in recent years.Junior high school is a golden period for cultivating students’ English learning power.It is conducive to stimulate students’ English learning motivation,make them study actively,think and explore problems positively,overcome learning difficulties,complete English learning goals and improve English learning efficiency.Therefore,through the questionnaire and interview,this study aims to investigate the current situation of junior high school students’ English learning power,find out the existing problems,analyze the causes,and put forward some suggestions about developing junior high school students’ English learning power.Based on this,the following three research questions are identified in this study:1.What’s the overall level of the students’ English learning power in junior high school? 2.What is the performance of junior high school students in each dimension of English learning power(English learning motivation,English learning perseverance,English learning ability,English learning creativity)? 3.Is there a gender difference in English learning power among junior high school students? If yes,what is the difference?Firstly,311 students in grade eight of Tianjin No.90 Middle School are selected to do the questionnaire,and statistical analysis is conducted by using SPSS26.0.Then,8 students(4 boys and 4 girls)are selected randomly to interview.Through the analysis of the questionnaire and interview results,the following conclusions are drawn: 1.The overall level of junior high school students’ English learning power is at the upper-middle level.2.The performance of English learning perseverance is a little bit deficient.And the performances of the other three dimensions are good.3.There are significant differences between boys and girls in the four dimensions of English learning power.The performances of girls’ English learning motivation and English learning perseverance are greater than that of boys.And the performances of boys’ English learning ability and English learning creativity are greater than that of girls.Through the analysis of the research results,this study finds the problems in the English learning power of junior high school students.Students’ English motivation is mainly extrinsic rather than intrinsic motivation.They lack perseverance to learn English.They also lack the English learning ability to use English learning strategies and methods flexibly,and their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in the dimension of English learning creativity are insufficient.In view of these problems,this study puts forward suggestions to develop the English learning power of junior high school students.Teachers should change the single evaluation system of "only score" and optimize the teaching process;they should also create difficult situations,and cultivate students’ good learning habits.And teachers need to teach English learning strategies and methods and let students use what they have learned.Finally,teachers should take students as the main body to make them actively explore and create,and offer English characteristic courses.
