Great art songs are often based on high literary poetry, scored to fit the poetic mood,to achieve the perfect combination of poetry and music. From the singer’s point of view, the right starting point and the right direction to take the art song to the next level is to understand the richness of the images in the poem,to analyse each of the composer’s phrases in a way that fits the poem, and to find a clear and precise interpretation.Edward Benjamin Britten(1913-1976)was a leading British composer of the twentieth century. He was the man who, after Henry Purcell, once again brought British music to its peak and at the same time brought it to the world stage. His compositions cover a wide range of musical genres and reflect his understanding and composition of many aspects of music. This essay will focus on Wagtail and Baby, the third piece in Britten’s vocal suite Winter Word, and Pounds Songsters, the sixth piece,to explore how Benjamin combined poetry and music with his own singing, based on an ontological analysis of poetry and music. The study is based on an ontological analysis of poetry and music, combined with his own singing,to find out how Benjamin combines his poetry with his musical sensibility to produce a unique compositional style and technique,in order to provide some reference and value for Britten’s art song performance.
