It is a critical stage for students to learn English in primary school,which plays a critical role in the their lifetime English learning.Vocabulary,as the basic element of English learning,is the basis of all the English activities.How to learn vocabulary effectively has long been an important research subject for foreign and domestic scholars.Without enough vocabulary,people cannot listen,speak,read,write or translate.At the same time,it will seriously affect the effectiveness of communication.Therefore,vocabulary teaching is an essential part of English teaching.While in the traditional vocabulary teaching,teachers teach a large number of words to students and ask them to remember,ignoring the creation of the context in their vocabulary teaching,which caused that pupils learning words by rote instead of using them in the real life.Narrative Approach advocates the teacher imparts knowledge by telling stories in foreign language teaching.Students learn knowledge in a real or possible situation that created by the teacher,they involved in all kinds of activities closed to their real life.In this way,they can acquire language gradually.The study attempts to apply the Narrative Approach to English vocabulary teaching in primary school,it mainly research two questions:(1)What are the effect of Narrative Approach on the improvement of students’ English vocabulary level?(2)What are the changes of students’ interest towards English vocabulary learning in primary school? The author has chosen two classes of students in Grade 6 of No.1Primary School of Shenyang,one is considered as experimental class,the other as controlled class.The experiment was researched by the way of pre-test,post-test and interview.During three months experiment,the experimental class has taught by the Narrative Approach while the controlled class have applied traditional vocabulary teaching method.Before the experiment,two classes had the pre-test at the same time.After the experiment,two classes had the post-test.And then the author randomly selected nine students in the experimental class as interviewees.Finally,the author collected the data,analyzed the result by SPSS and came to a conclusion.From the results of the experiment,the author has concluded that Narrative Approach is better than traditional vocabulary teaching method.Compared with the result of pre-test and post-test in two classes,Narrative Approach can improve students’ English vocabulary level to some extent.From the result of the interview,Narrative Approach can enhance students’ interests in learning English words.Therefore,Narrative Approach is conducive to English vocabulary teaching in primary school,but remains more study to make a further research.
