Cultivating students’ reading ability has been widely concerned under the background of cultivating students’ core competencies of the English subject.During the actual process of reading teaching,however,teachers often attach importance to the vocabulary as well as grammar teaching,and leave aside the comprehension of the general idea and framework of the article.Students cannot understand the reading articles comprehensively,and passively receive knowledge under the teacher-centered method.Therefore,students have insufficient learning motivation in English reading over time,which probably leads students to improve their reading scores much slowly.It is necessary to provide an effective English reading teaching method in senior high school to stimulate students’ motivation for reading English texts and help students improve the English reading scores.Mind mapping is a visual tool for knowledge representation and radioactive thinking.It highlights that students effectively organize the organic relationship and grasp the overall structure.Combined with colors,images,symbols,and characters,the mind mapping makes divergent thinking more figurative and reified.Ever since the mind mapping was introduced into the education field,it has influenced the process of education and teaching positively.For example,it helps inspire students’ creativity and strengthen memory and recall for information.Intending to check the effectiveness of mind mapping in English reading teaching,the author applied mind mapping in the reading class to explore the following questions with guidance of the Constructivism Theory,the Schema Theory and the Knowledge Visualization Theory:(1)What is the current situation of English reading teaching and learning in Jinan University Town Experimental Senior High School?(2)What effects does the application of mind mapping have on students’ motivation for reading English texts in senior high school?(3)What effects does the application of mind mapping have on students’ reading academic scores in senior high school?The research started in September 2021 and ended in January 2022,which lasted for more than four months.The 90 participants come from two parallel classes of grade one in Jinan University Town Experimental Senior High School.The control class employed the traditional English reading teaching method,while the experimental class adopted the mind mapping method.In order to obtain more information about the situation of English reading teaching and learning and the motivation in reading English texts,the study mainly used three research instruments,including three research instruments,including interviews,questionnaires,as well as tests before the experiment and after the experiment.The data was analyzed with the help of SPSS 26.0.The results reflect that the mind mapping applied in English reading can do improve the current situation of senior high school students’ English reading.It can enhance students’ motivation to read English texts and improve students’ reading scores efficiently.This research not only enriches the mind mapping application,but also provides a reference for exploring effective methods of English reading teaching in senior high school.However,how to apply the mind mapping to other English teaching fields still needs to be further explored in the future.
