Reading is an important means of input in the learning of English and reading ability is one of the basic skills required for junior and senior secondary students in the New Curriculum. At the same time, reading accounts for a relatively large number of marks in English examinations, making the teaching of English reading play an extremely important role in English teaching. The General English Curriculum Standards(Revised 2022,2017Edition)make it clear that there should be sound continuum between English course in senior high schools and in junior high schools.Besides,a solid foundation for the development of core literacy of English subject should be laid for all senior high school students through the compulsory courses in senior high schools. However, there are differences in the English teaching system in junior and senior secondary schools as well as in the requirements for English reading skills. Some junior secondary school students are unable to adapt quickly to the new requirements of senior secondary school when they enter the senior secondary level and have greater difficulties in learning to read in English. Therefore the teaching of English reading in high school cannot simply revolve around the relevant knowledge of high school, but must be effectively bridged between junior and senior high school. This study takes a senior English teacher and students of a high school in Hanzhong as the research subjects, and adopts questionnaire, interview, text analysis and classroom observation methods to investigate and study the current situation of the continuum of English reading teaching in junior and senior high schools, aiming to understand the current situation to explore the factors affecting the effective continuum and to propose more targeted and feasible strategies.According to the survey,it was found that both high school teachers and students have a supportive attitude towards the continuum of English reading teaching in junior and senior secondary schools, but the importance attached to the teaching continuum in terms of concrete performance is not obvious, which directly affects the development of senior students’ English reading ability and to some extent has a negative impact on both teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. This study analyses the factors influencing the effective teaching continuum between junior and senior secondary English reading teaching, including teachers’ awareness of the teaching continuum, strategies of the teaching continuum and students’ learning methods, and this study proposes strategies from the perspectives of teachers, students and schools to promote teaching continuum between junior and senior secondary English reading teaching. This study argues that developing an effective bridge between junior and senior English reading teaching will enable the senior students to adapt to senior English life as soon as possible, while developing his enthusiasm and confidence in learning English and laying a solid foundation for future teaching and student learning. In conclusion, the continuum of English reading teaching in junior and senior secondary schools is an indispensable part of the teaching process and requires the cooperation and support of all parties to do the bridging job well.
