A Study Of Pragmatic Markers Of Chinese Praise And Related Studies In English

In daily oral communication,there are a large number of pragmatic markers of approval,such as"en"(嗯)"shuodedui"(说得对)"meicuo"“没错”"shi"(是)"haode"(好的)and so on.We take modern Chinese like pragmatic markers"shi"(是)"dui"(对)"xing"(行)"hao"(好)and their variants as examples,and study the typical pragmatic approval markers and their variants in Chinese from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives,based on speech act theory.the thesis further studies the pragmatic markers of English approval,such as"of course""sure""yes""OK""right"and"fine".This paper is divided into eight chapters:The first part is the introduction,which mainly includes the significance of the topic,the review on the related previous researches,our research content,methods and corpus sources.Chapter one: Based on the prototype theory,we put the Chinese pragmatic markers of approval "shi"(是)"dui"(对)"xing"(行)"hao"(好)into the framework of "typical-atypical",and discuss them in terms of their discourse modes and discourse functions.Furthermore the characteristics of the approval category are described in the three aspects: prototype category characteristics,family similarity characteristics and fuzziness characteristics,so as to further explain the approval continuum from the typical approval to the atypical.Chapter two:Taking "shi"(是)as an example,this paper analyzes its formal variants,classification characteristics,discourse patterns and semantic cohesion.We find that the pragmatic functions of "shi"(是)include the discourse cohesion function of continuing and ending the topic,and the interpersonal interaction functions,including highlighting power relationship,and expressing response,politeness,euphemism and irony.In the meantime,this paper discusses the source and formation motivation of the approval mark "shi"(是)from a diachronic perspective.Chapter three: This paper analyzes the semantic cohesion between the approval speech act expressed by the same kind of pragmatic marker "dui"(对)and its variant forms and the facts stated in the initiator,mainly in the aspects of formal variants,the classification of speech acts expressed by "dui"(对)and its information structure modes.discusses its pragmatic function.In the meantime from a diachronic perspective,this paper further discusses the evolution track and formation motivation of the pragmatic mark "dui"(对)of the same kind of praise.Chapter four: Taking "xing"(行)as an example,this paper studies its formal variants,classification characteristics,information structure modes,semantic cohesion and its pragmatic function in the dynamic context.At the same time,from a diachronic perspective,this paper further discusses the evolution track and formation motivation of the pragmatic mark "xing"(行)of appraisal.Chapter five: Taking the pragmatic mark "hao"(好)of the same kind of praise as an example,this paper describes its formal variants,classification characteristics,its information structure modes,and the semantic cohesion between the approval speech act expressed by the pragmatic mark "hao"(好)and the facts stated in the initiator.Furthermore It discusses the pragmatic functions in terms of its discourse organization and interpersonal function.In the meantime,the paper explores the evolution track and formation motivation of the pragmatic mark "hao"(好)in language use.Chapter six:In the similar framework and methods,this paper makes an internal comparison among pragmatic markers"shi"(是)"dui"(对)"xing"(行)"hao"(好)and discusses the differences between the four in language use.From the perspective of discourse interaction,taking"haobao"(好吧)and"xingbao"(行吧)as examples,this paper discusses their interactive functions in communication interaction in terms of speech act function and modality function.Chapter seven: Taking the approval pragmatic markers "of course" "sure" "yes" "OK" "right" and "fine" in English as examples,this paper makes an all-round study on the approval pragmatic markers in English,mainly in the aspects of their formal variants,information structure patterns,semantic cohesion,approval strength and use frequency,as well as their corresponding Chinese translation forms.Likewise,starting from the dynamic corpus,this paper discusses their pragmatic functions in language use in terms of the discourse cohesion and interpersonal functions..Chapter eight: Summarizes the whole,lists out important conclusions,and points out the shortcomings of the paper.
