Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning.Effective vocabulary teaching and learning process can help students promote their vocabulary learning efficiency and expand their vocabulary.This study took 270 students in grade two of X senior high school as the research subjects.Based on the comprehensible input hypothesis,depth of processing theory,this study aimed to answer the following research questions:(1)Which glossing form is more effective to incidental vocabulary acquisition in immediate vocabulary test?(2)Which glossing form is more effective to vocabulary retention in delayed vocabulary test?Research subjects were randomly divided into 9 groups in this study.The first group was the pre-experiment group,which was responsible for selecting target words and reading materials.The second group to the ninth group were Chinese single gloss group,English single gloss group,Chinese multiple-choice gloss group,English multiple-choice gloss group,picture gloss group,picture + Chinese single gloss group,picture + English single gloss group and no gloss group respectively.After completing reading comprehension,the subjects were asked to take the immediate vocabulary test.At the same time,there was a delayed vocabulary test after one week.The contents of the two vocabulary tests were the same,but the order of target words in the delayed vocabulary test was changed in order to avoid memory traces.The results of the study indicated that(1)Glosses can promote learners’ incidental vocabulary acquisition in reading.Whether in the immediate or delayed vocabulary test,the experimental group with different glossing forms performed significantly better than the no gloss group;(2)The results of multimodal gloss groups with picture + text were better than other gloss groups.At the same time,this study also found that(1)When it comes to incidental vocabulary acquisition and vocabulary retention of English multiple-choice gloss group were poor.(2)No matter which glossing form,the effect of vocabulary retention was inferior to the incidental vocabulary acquisition effect of the subjects.
